The virtual holiday activities for students is an online Christmas Scavenger Hunt. It includes 10 fun festive prompts for Zoom Calls.

The information on this page was last updated on January 6, 2024.

Organizing a Christmas treasure hunt is a fun way to spend time with family and friends over the holidays. With social distance and a plethora of online meetings and virtual hangouts on video chats like Facetime and Zoom, the scavenger hunt must, of course, move online as well.

We’ve been doing a lot of Christmas quizzes over the past few weeks, so this week I wanted to change up the structure of the family Zoom fun. I used a variety of question formats, as well as a treasure hunt round. It was a lot of fun and a good challenge to have everyone racing about the home looking for the items they were looking for.

Yes, we put a lot of the activities we offer on Christmasphere to the test!

You may hold your own scavenger hunt as the primary activity and build on the recommended list below, or you can do what we did and include it as an additional round to your quiz or family games night.

Here are some quick connections to the material in this page.

What is a Christmas scavenger hunt on the internet?

Simply put, an online Christmas scavenger hunt is when a host gives players certain prompts or clues and they have a certain amount of time to collect as many of the items as possible in order to gain points. The one who scores the most points is the winner.

The prompts may be as simple as a list of real named things (e.g. candy cane, ornament, cookie) or they can be a hint or prompt that requires the participants to consider how to interpret and locate an item that fits the criteria (e.g. find something shiny, find something you heat, find something related to the movie Elf). Check out our list of prompts below, or come up with your own!

How to put up a Christmas scavenger hunt on the internet

You’ll just need a timer and a set of prompts/clues for things you want the players to discover as the host or quizmaster. We suggest making the time limit low enough that finding all of the objects throughout the home is a struggle. We believe that 5 minutes for about 10 things is a reasonable challenge. If you want to make it even more difficult, cut the time in half. To represent how difficult each question is and to keep things fresh, we award various levels of points to each one.

If there are youngsters participating, it’s a good idea to allow them a little extra time to complete their search. If this is part of a larger question and kids are competing against adults, it’s also an excellent opportunity for them to get extra points.

We had the instructions on a PDF (which we will provide below) that we put up on Zoom as a screen sharing so that everyone could read what they needed to discover for themselves. While the zoom call proceeded and the participants were looking, the host set the timer, which we utilized on our phone, and periodically shouted out the remaining time.

Finally, each participant must report what they discovered for each question, and the host will determine if it fulfills the criteria for awarding points.

The rules of the online scavenger hunt are as follows:

  1. Participants are given a certain length of time (e.g., 5 minutes) to collect things from around their home in order to complete each of the prompts.
  2. The list of prompts is visible to everyone on the shared screen option.
  3. The presenter will have the ultimate decision on whether or not each item meets the scavenger hunt question.
  4. When the timer goes off, everyone must return to their screens/computers. They have 10 seconds to return to the zoom call once the presenter says the timer has expired. After that, they lose one point for every ten seconds.

For the Christmas scavenger hunt, here are some ideas and clues.

For the Christmas scavenger hunt, we have a variety of ten distinct prompts that represent varying degrees of difficulty in terms of understanding the prompt and possibilities of finding it throughout the home. We give a number of points next to each query to represent the difficulty level.

The following list is geared at a household with older children and teenagers. You may modify it to make it more difficult for a small group of adults or to make it easier for smaller children.

Use basic hints or actual item recommendations for young children.
