For our visitors, we created a vegetarian mezze board with a wide variety of flavors, textures, and colors to provide a visually appealing lunch meal as well as something for everyone to construct their own plate with. 

Falafel, grilled halloumi, grilled aubergine, artichokes, peppers, feta cheese, dates, figs, pomegranate, grapes, cherry tomatoes, cucumber, olives, houmous, tzatziki, two kinds of couscous salads, almonds, pistachios, and flatbreads were all on our vegetarian mezze board.

The beauty of a vegetarian mezze board is that you can add anything you want, use whatever cuisine is in season or local to you, and think about what would work best for your visitors.

Meat may, of course, be included on mezze boards, but we wanted a vegetarian option in this case. 

How to put together a vegetarian mezze platter

The base

It all comes down to establishing a solid foundation for your mezze board. Any meal platter should be large enough to securely contain all of your dish’s components. A big, flat hardwood chopping board is the traditional choice. These appear appealing to serve food on, and even after the nibbles are consumed, the board continues to look nice as the underside is exposed.

If you’re serving a lot of items that may roll, a tray-style food plate with sides can be necessary to keep everything from rolling away. Nobody likes to see a stray grape strewn over the carpet! For a grazing board, an enamel tray would be wonderful.

You may use a disposable foil tray or a plastic board if you want to keep things simple. Some individuals have even laid out new rolls of brown paper along a long table or countertop.

If you want to go for a more upscale appearance, choose a marble or glass chopping board.

To make your vegetarian mezze board, you’ll need the following items:

  • If it’s a special occasion, select beautiful cutlery.

Second, consider how your visitors will choose items from the mezze plate. Will you provide them with side plates to eat from? Do you want to keep things simple and use just napkins? 

Is the food plate being given to people sitting at a table? Is it a more informal event with people standing and socializing while picking at the food on a kitchen island?
